Route - North Coast 500
Loch Carron is where the NC500 really starts for me. From Loch Carron you head over to Bealach na Bà, and what can I say? It's a sight to behold in real life! No image or video really does it justice. The Bealach na Bà was the star of the show on this route, and it's brutal! The descent down into Applecross was amazing and made the whole climb worth it, even though I did get a little carried away and overheated my brakes and got brake fade. Please be careful!
Favourite Moment: The whole west coast was epic. It felt like I was on a different planet, and I was the only one on it at times. I was setting off early in the morning to have the roads to myself. I fell in love with Shieldaig and could have stayed there for weeks. A very quiet little village with stunning scenery.
Any tips or advice for someone doing this route?
Try and start the climb early up the Bealach na Bà to avoid cars, or you will be constantly stopping at passing points. Carry a water filter as there are quite a few streams and waterfalls on the route. It's an epic route and the views are out of this world all along the west coast, and it's very tough in places with all the climbs, but you also get all those awesome descents as well. I'm an average cyclist and not on the same level as Josh, but it doesn't mean you can't do it. Just go at your own pace and make sure your bike is in great condition, especially your brakes. The NC500 is one you'll never forget! :)
